Art’s meaning can be many different things, some of them have meanings that came to us as a source of inspiration or it came from a dream with very subtle meanings to what they represent in our life or what we want them to believe.
Some art designs will come in various shapes and sizes, some of it may be representing a human body, or a figure that was drawn up or handmade. To take into account of what it could mean only the artist themselves can either tell us what it means or just make us come up with our own thoughts of what it could be for example in the short film from Man Ray, “Return to Reason”. We are shown many different things assorting from a sundial or watch ticking as it turns from its original color to being inverted, but that’s not the only thing that played during that part for after the watch disappeared a punch of nails or streak lines appeared following afterward following the same sound the clock made when it appeared still making us wonder if the sound is the nails or the clock. Then the one that made it bizarrely questionable was the human figure moving her upper exposed body left to right while standing perfectly still, the film is labeled “Return to Reason” so it got me wondering what is this part of the segment trying to signify to me or to any of the other viewers of the audience this film was targeting or what was it original purpose?
The film is just essentially showing us a set of figure’s as it constantly loses its meaning either giving a new meaning or trying to give us a new interpretation of what it wants to be. One example with meaning as it constantly changes as well is “Dadaist Film – 1928”. This film doesn’t directly tackle at the meaning of what a dad is, but as the clock at the beginning starts to turn as time moves everything gains life as hat’s fly at the start of the film as it goes to their owners near the end of the film as they drink tea, and a man fixes his bowtie as it fights against the man who adjusts it to the front of his neck. By giving a subject an original meaning and changing it to form a new meaning is what makes art so relevant in a lot of cases, art is not just defined by the artist itself. It can be defined by even anyone who isn’t an artist as it takes on a different meaning in other’s who interpret the art piece in their own way of what it is and what it could mean.
Some art can look ugly, take meaning from shape or everyday object and still have an unknown meaning or a meaning that the artist only knows. That can sometimes be the case where it’s meaning has gone astray as that’s when some artist has to explain its meaning so that it gets a purpose to what it truly means so that it can be looked at more clearly.
